A new phase in strengthening of personal data protection begins

In order to strengthen personal data protection, the Public Service Development Agency of the Ministry of Justice in Georgia is entering into a new phase of cooperation with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). The Public Service Development Agency has successfully met the requirements of the visa liberalization action plan with the European Union (EU) related to personal data protection and is continuing to improve its current processes. The goal of this initiative is to ensure permanent personal data protection.

On April 12, the first meeting regarding the aforementioned cooperation program took place at the Public Service Hall.

The event was opened by Giorgi Pataridze – Chairperson of the Public Service Development Agency and Natia Natsvilishvili – Assistant to UNDP’s Permanent Representative.

The Public Service Development Agency, which is the owner of the largest database of population information in the country and issues identity documents, is constantly working to strengthen its capabilities in order to ensure reliable protection of personal data, gain international experience and raise public awareness in the area of personal data protection.

Cooperation between the Public Service Development Agency and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) encompasses several aspects. These include: training for employees of the Agency, risk assessment of existing business practices related to personal data protection; amendments to regulatory documents governing the protection of personal information in accordance with the Law “on Personal Data Protection” in order to enhance awareness and promote the protection of individuals’ rights regarding personal data.

The cooperation is carried out with the financial assistance of the European Union as part of the program “Human Rights for All – Facilitation to the Implementation and Monitoring the National Human Rights Strategy and Action Plan”. This program is a collaborative effort between four UN agencies: the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the International Labour Organization (ILO).
