On the initiative of the Ministry of Justice of Georgia, from April 15, 2010, biometric passports conforming to the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) will be issued in Georgia.
The passport of a Georgian citizen is a document that confirms the identity and nationality of a Georgian both on the territory of Georgia and abroad. It is a Georgian document issued to citizens of Georgia of any age with the purpose of travelling outside Georgia, going abroad and returning to Georgia. Responsibility for the safekeeping of the passport and its proper use rests with its rightful holder.
A high-tech and forgery-resistant travel document is a passport, which is used for full identification purposes. Unlike the so-called “non-biometric” passport, the biometric passport has an electronic carrier that ensures the protection of the document, making it almost impossible to falsify. Personal data of the holder is recorded in a secure format on the electronic medium. Additionally, fingerprints of the holder are stored on the same electronic carrier, which are more securely protected than other data and can only be read in specific cases, such as when crossing borders. The transition to a biometric passport system has significantly enhanced the trustability of Georgian-issued documents. In order to improve the biometric passport, the Public Service Development Agency and Ministry of Justice engaged in months of negotiations and collaboration with a manufacturing company to develop a more secure and reliable system.
As a result of the agreement reached, significant improvements have been made to passports since June 2016, specifically:
The passport cover has been made more flexible and replaced with a material that is less prone to damage. The paint used on the cover is also more durable.
The folds of the cover and inner pages have been enhanced to prevent tearing and damage. Passports are no longer separated into individual pages.
