Important information regarding visa-free entry to the European Union

The Ministry of Justice of Georgia has launched an information campaign regarding the rules of visa-free travel within the European Union, when issuing a passport to a citizen of Georgia. In order to facilitate the access of Georgian citizens to relevant information on this topic, a dedicated brochure has been developed to clarify the rules and requirements for visa-free travel. Upon receipt of their passports, all citizens will be provided with a copy of the brochure on visa-free travel within the European Union at branches of the Public Service Hall, community centers and territorial offices of the Public Service Development Agency. Special training has been provided to the relevant operators to ensure that they are able to answer any questions or concerns that may arise from citizens on the subject.

The brochure provides detailed information on all the essential aspects, including: – A list of countries where travel without a visa is possible; The duration and purpose of the trip, as well as a list of required documents. The purpose of this information campaign is to promptly inform Georgian citizens about the necessary regulations for travelling to EU countries while receiving their passports.

Please be advised that in order to travel to EU/Schengen Member States, a Georgian national must possess a biometric passport with a validity period of at least 90 days beyond the intended date of departure from these countries.

Since April 15, 2010, Georgia has issued a biometric passport for its citizens, which is a highly secure travel document designed to prevent forgery. The use of this passport aims to accurately identify the individual and eliminate the risk of fraudulent use of official documents. Unlike an ordinary passport (which is not biometric), the biometric version includes an electronic component that contains the personal details of the holder, an electronic photograph and a fingerprint. From autumn 2016 onwards, the third-generation biometric passports are issued, which has even stronger security features than the second-generation passports introduced in 2010. This transition to a biometric system has significantly enhanced the reliability of Georgian-issued documents.
