Registration of marriage  

Marriage is a voluntary union of a man and a woman intending to start a family creating rights and obligations of the spouses.    

Marriage shall be registered in a Wedding House, territorial office of the Public Service Development Agency and Public Service Hall branch.  

In order to register marriage, the persons wishing to marry shall be of marriage age and shall file an application. 

Marriage is  allowed in Georgia from the age of 18. 

Registration of marriage through a representative is not permitted.

Marriage shall be registered with the attendance of two legally capable witnesses of full age.

Marriage is not allowed between:

•           Persons of whom at least one is already married to another person;  

•           Direct ascendants and descendants;  

•           Biological and non-biological sisters and brothers;  

•           Adoptive parents and adoptees;  

•           Persons of whom at least one is a beneficiary of support and who have not concluded a marriage contract provided for by Article 1172(2) of the Civil Code of Georgia.  

Documents required for registration of marriage:

•           Joint written application of persons wishing to marry;  

•           Identity documents of persons wishing to marry/witnesses;  

•           If a person wishing to marry was previously married, a document proving termination of the previous marriage;  

•           If an application is filed by a representative of a person wishing to marry – a document proving the representative authority and the representative’s identity document.   

Note: Agency shall be entitled to accept the passport of the foreign citizen without Georgian translation, if it contains Latin transliteration of the personal data of the foreign citizen. 

A document issued in other country (except an identity document) shall be submitted after duly legalized or apostilled, along with notarized Georgian translation.

A foreign citizen willing to register marriage in Georgia shall submit a document proving their stay in Georgia on legal grounds.   

Terms and fees

Registration of marriage in the territorial offices of the Public Service Development Agency and Public Service Hall branches, without special ceremony services, is free of charge.
