The Public Service Development Agency shared Georgia’s experiences at an international conference on statelessness

The Public Service Development Agency of the Ministry of Justice of Georgia attended a high-level regional conference on statelessness and shared its experience with representatives from various countries.

The participants of the international event discussed procedures for the establishment and registration of the status of stateless persons, as well as became familiar with the measures taken to reduce the number of stateless individuals.

The event took place in Baku, Azerbaijan. Along with representatives from Georgia, delegates from Moldova, Kazakhstan and Turkey, as well as representatives from the government, judiciary and civil sectors of Azerbaijan attended the conference.

A representative of the Public Service Development Agency of the Ministry of Justice of Georgia spoke about the progress achieved by Georgia as a country with successful experience in the field of addressing statelessness. The representative informed the conference attendees about the process for determining the status of stateless persons and a Door-to-Door campaign conducted by the Agency in collaboration with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to identify and document undocumented individuals.

It is worth noting that a representative of the UNHCR’s European office has described Georgia as one of the most successful countries in fulfilling its obligations regarding statelessness.

Georgia is a member of the global #Belong initiative of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The successes achieved by Georgia in addressing statelessness have brought the country even closer to meeting international standards.

The conference was jointly organized by the State Migration Service of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
